Campus Sustainability Steering Committee

Mission of the Committee

To implement the NAU Campus Sustainability Plan by initiating, coordinating, monitoring and publicizing efforts on the NAU campus that conserve natural resources and save costs while enhancing the university’s educational goals and workplace values.

Task Force Goals

Communications

To promote public awareness and action regarding the NAU Campus Sustainability Program

Environmental Management System

To develop a web-based system for the effective management of campus environmental information for the purpose of reducing consumption of natural resources and saving costs

Energy and Water

To plan and implement a conservation pledge for NAU students, faculty and staff to reduce their energy and water use by 10% in academic year 2005-06

Purchasing

To develop guidelines and policy for environmentally preferable purchasing on the NAU campus and to work with other offices in the City and County to develop procedures for high-volume, environmentally preferable purchasing.

Waste

To reduce the volume and costs of solid waste associated with trash, hazardous waste, compost, and recyclables by revising current procedures and by educating the NAU community

Food & Dining

To reduce food and dining waste; optimize recycling in dining halls; highlight local, organic and nutritious foods; and educate the NAU community about environmentally-friendly and locally-beneficial food purchasing and consumption

Natural Heritage

To provide historical and horticultural resources for native and low-water landscaping on campus

Revenue

To complete and implement a comprehensive plan for generating revenue to support the NAU Campus Sustainability Program
